This term in computer's I am doing game play-by-plays of a Starcraft tournament. Starcraft Starcraft is a RTS game (Real-time strategy) developed by Blizzard Entertainment and set in the 26th century. There are 3 factions, the terran (humans and their war machines), amazingly adaptable denizens of the Koprolu Sector, the zerg (hyper-evolutionary aliens that kind of look like insects) that use evolution instead of technology (such as evolving razor-sharp claws, projectile acid spores or armored carapaces) and the protoss (3 meter tall humanoids with psychic powers) that power all their technology with psychic power. What is really cool about this game is that all factions are completely unique and completely balanced (equal). For this reason they all have pros and cons. Key Terms
Unit-your army is made of units
Range-units can only attack things within their range
Rush-basic strategy that involves attacking as soon as you can
Supply-limit to amount of units you can produce, different units require different amounts of supply
Detector-some units can be burrowed or cloaked, this makes them invisible, detectors allow you to see these units
Turret-static (immovable) defensive building
DoT-damage over time
Add-On-Structures that only funtion when attached to a specific structure (specific to Terran)
Minerals-basic currency of Starcraft, every unit and building costs some minerals
Vespene Gas-secondary currency of Starcraft, is required for more advanced units and buildings
Micro-Controlling your units in a way that either keeps them alive longer or maximizes the damage you do to another unit
Macro-Creating a huge army, getting lots of units and overpowering your opponent Zerg
+best rush in the game
+cheapest base structure
+fastest build speed (units)
+cheapest units (can mass very large force of units)
+supplier is a unit that is a detector and can transport units
+all ground units can burrow (except Ultralisk)
+turrets expand creep
+toughest turrets (most health)
+can regenerate health
+/- one building produces all of the units
-most limited build space, must build on creep
-don't have any really powerful units
-builders morph into buildings
-suppliers are quite vulnerable
-base structure only gives 1 supply, others give 10 and 9 supply
Terran
+only first unit that can attack air units
+buildings can lift-off and land wherever you want (on passable terrain)
+can build anywhere
+can repair buildings and mechanical units
+start off with more supply than other factions
+if upgraded, they have the unit that has the longest range
+toughest builders
+have nuclear strikes
+/-can steal opponents add-ons
-no ground to ground turret
-buildings take DoT when HP becomes red
-have a hard time getting detection
Protoss
+only turret that can attack air and ground
+shield batteries can "repair" Protoss units (replenishes their plasma shields)
+strongest units
+builders can resume working after just starting the construction of a structure
+supply maker creates a small psionic matrix
+can regenerate plasma shield (usually around 1/2 of the units health) +can take control of other races (via Dark Archon)
+have permanently cloaked units
-slowest build speed
-can only build in psionic matrix
-most expensive units text in red is specific to Brood War (expansion of Starcraft) Our Starcraft tournament had 5 players to begin with that all played in the round robin. We all played each other once, and twice had the advantage of choosing the map. After the round robin Nick (Havok) didn't lose any of his games, one of them being a very surprising victory over the tournament favorite Taylor (qkrxogus). Tom (NeMiSiS) finished in second with another victory over Taylor(qkrxogus). Taylor finished in third, Jakob in fourth and Maxwell finished in fifth. Unfortunately for Maxwell he didn't play another game after the round robin. Four people got through and here are the games that they played. Playoffs (Seed #5 got eliminated in round robin)
